in brief
before i went on vacation, i wrote myself a little note about a topic i wanted to write about. after thinking about it, i think the note covered it all: “credit. non-commercial use. bite me.”
so instead of trying to expand on that, i’m going to mop my apartment and do some laundry. and continue to listen to yoshimi battles the pink robots over and over again.
this hasn’t happened in a while: a movie i want to see, serenity, isn’t playing at the laemmle grande. for a small theater, they have generally been good at getting the movies i want to see. maybe next week. (but then that’s when the wallace & gromit film is supposed to open….)
speaking of films, i saw corpse bride while on vacation, and it is pretty much what you would expect from a tim burton animation project. great design, pretty good story, good voice acting from johnny depp and helena bonham carter and others, decent soundtrack from danny elfman, etc. it’s not quite as good as the nightmare before christmas was, and too short, but i’d still recommend it.
pattern matching gone wrong
i thought to myself that it’s odd that two people i know used the word synchronicity recently. what makes it less odd is that it didn’t happen. one of them used serendipity.
there is a strange dichotomy in how sometimes people act as if everyone in the world has the same general experiences and beliefs that they do, and at other times people act as if they are the only one facing some particular issue or thought some particular way.
i don’t know what it all means. draw your own connections.
free museums
twenty-four los angeles museums are free tomorrow, october 1. that includes moca and the japenese american national museum downtown. (spotted by art.blogging.la.)
also, there’s a screening tomorrow night of infamy, a documentary about graffiti artists by doug pray, director of hype! and scratch.
new design
in the spirit of just getting it done, i kicked out the new design. as usual, it is best viewed from my desk. (second to that, using safari to get the ever-changing color effect. or possibly the latest firefox beta releases.)
i also “upgraded” the feeds to almost-valid atom 1.0, and got rid of the rss feeds. it is almost-valid atom 1.0 because apparently the atom 1.0 standard requires a non-empty titles. i wrote what i think about that three years ago.
atom 1.0 is even worse than other formats in this regard, if the complaints of the feed validator are to believed. not only is the <title> element required on each entry, but it can’t even be empty. nuts to that.
other things are undoubtedly broken. some day i may fix them.
los angeles downtown news confirms what i had questioned in the article from the los angeles times about the sheriff’s department “dumping” of someone near the midnight mission: “Ward, the Midnight Mission spokesman, confirmed that the single-file line often stretches to Seventh and San Pedro streets.”
other interesting bits of news:
- the grand avenue festival is next weekend.
- the art district farmers’ market is struggling, but local developers have chipped in to keep it going. the city council is looking at extending the run of the financial district farmers’ market, and possibly moving it to pershing square.
- this interview with ed begley jr. is fun. he’s starring in david mamet’s romance, which opens next weekend.
- microsoft is relocating their los angeles offices to downtown.
also, pete’s got a review in the times, although it is a pretty goofy review.
and on my left is a parking lot
it’s a little odd to hear a tour from a double-decker bus outside your window.
a week from wednesday i start the training to become a docent at the los angeles central library.
applications to be a docent for the los angeles conservancy walking tours are due november 20. they are especially looking for people who can do weekday tours. (which is funny because the library docent program was most interested in people who could do weekend tours.)
smudgy window
what i write here is an imperfect view into my life.
but more frustrating from my perspective is the imperfect view from this side.
it is hard to get acute reactions from obtuse provocations.
