threadless is having another $10 t-shirt sale. checking things out, i saw candy for baby, by jesse lefkowitz and initially thought it was an anaglyph. it’s not, but that would be an interesting thing to do for a shirt.

from a report (on the newdowntown mailing list) about the vote of the cultural affairs commission rejecting plans for the new police headquarters in downtown los angeles: “A third commissioner voted against the headquarters plan because the design was not in keeping with positive feng shui. (Specifically, the sharp point on the north side would direct negative energy toward City Hall and those who work there.)”

i took the mysql pro certification a couple of weeks ago (in prague), and found out today that i passed. i guess that is a good sign for someone who spends his work day hacking on the guts of the server. or that i still eat multiple choice tests for lunch.
like some other open source projects, mysql is celebrating it’s tenth anniversary (birthday?) this year. you can buy a coffee mug to commemorate the event.
according to monty, version 1.0 of mysql was released (“internally”) on may 23, 1995. happy birthday, mysql! the anniversary of the first public release is still a few months away.
charity, may 2005
i’ve gone local again, with inner-city arts, an arts center for kids in downtown los angeles.
one thing that focusing on local charities gets me is various invitations to events by these charities, sometimes for events that require buying tickets (at steep prices, usually) and sometimes for free. maybe some day i’ll start taking advantage of this.
for example, through the library foundation of los angeles i got an invite for a reception, “author program,” book signing, and dinner with michael eisner in the middle of june. it’s for his book, camp. the dinner is at the california club, jacket and tie required.
i don’t even own a jacket. at least not the kind they’re talking about. i don’t think they’d count my ffem windbreaker.
i got the urge recently to buy music by artists and in genres where i don’t have much music. more grist for the constant party shuffle of my whole music library (which cracked 20GB).
- will the circle be unbroken by the nitty gritty dirt band
- guero by beck
- one nation under a groove by funkadelic
- surfer rosa by the pixies
- astral weeks by van morrison
- moondance by van morrison
so far, i really love will the circle be unbroken and one nation under a groove.
i bought it all at cheap-cds.com, and got it quickly since they are located in southern california. i like their minimalist approach, although it had a disturbing tendency to lose my shopping cart. i’m surprised they don’t have a similar dvd service.
