children’s court, los angeles central library
when the tom bradley wing was added to the los angeles central library, the entrance to what was the children’s department was moved to become the entrance to the mark taper auditorium, and the children’s court was was also relocated, including the sculptures by lee lawrie. it is generally closed to the public now, but i was able to get in while observing a tour and grabbed snapshots of all of the panel carvings and the lotus shaft fountain. the fountain isn’t actually functioning — i’m not even sure if it is hooked up to anything now.
not a cornfield
today i finally made it over to see “not a cornfield” from the ground instead of from a gold line train. it’s a strange experience standing in the middle of a cornfield within sight of downtown.
there were no activities going on while i was there, and only a few people around. walking down the path through the middle of the field is very isolating, because the corn is tall enough to block out most of the surrounding area and muffle the sound.
on the way back home, i grabbed a french dipped sandwich at philippe the original.
adding favorites on blo.gs
the blo.gs search is still down (i guess yahoo has just decided to abandon the user-facing part of the service), but you can still add a blog to your list of favorites using this bookmarklet.
it finally dawned on me i could use this to re-add the few blogs that got lost during the database mishap they had, which you can read about.. nowhere. they’ve never acknowledged it.
the next thing i need to do is write something to download my list of favorites, go out and actually check if the blogs it claims were updated were actually updated, and then generate my list of favorites with (more) accurate update information. jeremy (still) isn’t quite the blogging machine that blo.gs claims he is.
der krieger und die kaiserin (or the princess and the warrior, as it was titled for american release) is a re-teaming of director tom tykwer and actress franka potente, who also did run lola run together. as you might guess from the title, it has a bit of a fairy-tale quality to it.
it has a totally different energy than run lola run, but it is a pretty amazing film. every scene has a couple of layers to it, and it really doesn‘t fall into any easy genres, although it is a little bit of a heist film, a little bit of a romantic film, and is partially set at an insane asylum, with all the characters that brings with it.
the film is set in wuppertal, germany, and has some scenes of (and set in) the schwebebahn wuppertal, which is a suspension monorail that looks incredible.
