oil storm is a faux-documentary from fx that reminded me, at least viscerally, of the day after. it chronicles a series of events (hurricane, shipping accident, attack on infrastructure in saudi arabia) that send the price of oil up near $150 a barrel, and the price of gasoline of $8 a gallon. the whole structure of the movie is just really well done, and i think they made the right choice in not being over the top in pushing a particular point of view. it really does come off as a television news documentary from the future, albeit with a focus on the smaller players in the story than you might see in real life. (for example, the administration is represented by a couple of under-cabinet-level players, and the references to the president and cabinet officials is pretty fleeting.)
one can only hope that this ends up being as un-prophetic as the day after has.

I do thank you for mentioning this. As I don't have cable TV, a friend of mine taped it for me. I watched it tonight (June 12).
My general impression were:
1) The American economy is stupid, because we are too dependant on oil. It's our fault, and we are all going to die. We will freeze in our homes, old people won't get their medications, and President GW Bush isn't going to fix the problem for us. (this is the liberal point of view)Which leads into my second impression of the movie.
2) The only way the problem could have been averted or lessened was government intervention. Farmers needed subsidies. Aparently, Washington DC is the source of free money which will save us all. But the evil government is too stingy to save us all. (more liberal point of view.)
3) Militay action in the middle East was worse than ineffective. Actually, the troops probably made it worse. (Which is what the liberals are saying.)
4) The only transportation in the US seems to be SUV, or gas guzzler. Children have bicycles, and farmers have horses. This "ignoring the truth" is a very liberal point of view.
5) The only people in the world who have firearms are military, terrorists, police, and armed robbers. Or, so the liberals would have us believe.
6) The only way to heat ones home is with fuel oil. And when the fuel is cut or reduced, everyone is cold at home. There are no other ways to heat ones home. This is absurd. And a bit liberal.
7) The way to get things done is to storm, protest, and try to make the government fix the problem. However, the GW Bush administration isn't very effective at doing this. More liberalism.
8) The Russians will save us, in the end. We will have to beg them, but they will save us.
9) There are no oil supplies in US, Hawaii, or Alaska. All of our oil is foreign oil. This is liberal wishing.
10) The only way to prevent such a crisis is for business and industry to develop alternative energies. However, this has not yet been done. So, we'd better clamor and protest in Washington and try to make President GW Bush do something about alternative energy.
11) I may have more observations, if I choose to watch the movie again. But as for me, it was far too left leaning liberal.
