apachecon hotel options
for apachecon, which i’m not speaking at but planning to attend, the official conference hotel (alexis park resort) is $89 a night. for the nights i’m likely to be there (sunday through tuesday), the hard rock hotel and casino is $99 a night and is right across the street, and aladdin casino & resort is also $89 a night and is just down the street (on the strip).
i guess staying at the alexis park makes the most sense, but it also feels wrong to stay someplace i’ve already been. (i guess another alternative would be going even further away from the alexis park, but that’s either quite a hike, or you lose what you gain by taking taxis between the two.)

Having stayed at both the Hard Rock and the Alexis Park, I would so stay at the Hard Rock. While you get a suite at the Alexis Park, the rooms aren't actually all that nice. They're a little cheap and shabby. The rooms at the Hard Rock are much nicer, even if they're smaller. Plus, there's that whole rockstar glam thing going on. (Note: it's more of "across" the street than "down" the street, if that helps make up your mind.)
The Hard Rock also has a really nice pool, if you're into that kind of thing. Technically, the Alexis Park also has a pool, but I didn't see anyone swimming in it last year at the conference. Also, layout of the Hard Rock doesn't make you go through the casino to get to your room, which is a plus.
As for the Aladdin, well, I've never been there, but I'm all for staying as close to the conference hotel as possible, and even if you're going out to the strip to gamble, the strip is not within easy walking distance from the Alexis Park. (I have walked it, but it's not a nice walk.)
Of course, I'll be staying at the Alexis Park, but that's because I'm speaking. Also, I might come early, and the weekend prices at nicer hotels are out of sight unless you get the special conference rate.
