justin mason has written up an explanation of how gmail handles threading. looks pretty tasty.
but reportedly they fall back to doing subject-matching in the absence of headers that allow proper threading.

I think the main reason they fall back to using subject-matching, is because that's the only way it can work in the presence of some MS mail software (Outlook IIRC?), which will not use In-Reply-To or References headers. yep, MS have broken yet another perfectly-good system :(
