more positive atkins studies
this time, some positive atkins diet studies have hit the new england journal of medicine. for a diet that has been around for thirty years, it's a little sad that the best that can be mustered up is a one-year study, though. my dad reports great success on the diet, though.

I've met a half-dozen people who swear by it for short-term weight loss. And one who reported deep depression. If it wasn't for my love of bread, rice and all things "snack", I'd try it. Depression, I mean.
they will all die of heart disease eventually.
Did any of you acually read the book before you judged if the diet would work or not? Data is data, and a lot of it is saying Atkin's is safe!
Data is data, and that can be fabricated, but relevent studies I believe to be legit. Heart disease occuring from the hormones/food given to the cows, is much more likely. Actually the trans/hydrogenated fats would be a better bet for the Real cause. I agree with the short-term thing, as it's not safe (the reduced sugar part 20g.)long term. Depression, absolutely...if you are an emotional eater, as certain carbs do assist with the production of seratonin. I would appreciate any well-read feedback.
Now how about all that ketosis stuff? So what exactly are we breaking down so rapidly - to lose weight when deprived of sugars? Is is fat, water and/or copious amounts of precious muscle? When reminded about a few facts, carbs and protein yield 4 calories and fat yields nine. I suppose some say do the math, what do you say?

You got the wrong idea, the goal isn't to rid yourself of sugar but to limit your intake to that of our forefathers that weren't obese. 20g of carbs is the induction phase lifetime goals are around 100g based on your metabolism.
Atkins is really good for emotional eaters-- at least it was in my case. As a sufferer of bulima, swithcing to more stable foods (proteins, fats, fiber-rich carbs)makes my blodd sugar able and you don't binge. Its a postivly wonderful way of eating, becuase its attainable. The AMerican "healthy" way of eating never lets you feel satisfyed... you are destined to binge with lo-fat because fat is a must for satiation, with out fat your never full.
If you are fat, you are not going to die of heart failure, wake up if you are 100 lbs overweight you should try anything that would work, ignorance thats all... Listen c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y excessive carbohydrate intake gains weight, period!
I think that the Atkins diet sucks but I don't care for meat. I can't believe how uneducated people are about the diet when they make the negative comments. "Oh that meat and cheese diet? That is going to kill you!" Well, you can have fruits and vegetables, just not during the first two weeks. Please make sure you know what you are talking about before you open your mouth because you only succeed at making yourself sound ignorant.
If fish oils, soy, olive, canola, nuts, fruits, vegetables and high fiber foods are bad for you then I guess I'll get what I deserve. I know one thing, I eat healthier now on this diet than I have my whole life. I was a couch potato and a popcorn and dorito guy. I have eaten better on this diet than I have my whole life. If it's wrong, I guess I'm duped. I know what all the things in the first line of this message do for you, and I'm not the least bit afraid. If you feel like ripping on the diet, at least read the newest book available and make your decision. Medicine is dynamic, not perfect, but very dynamic. What will do me more harm. A BMI of 45 for 33 years or a diet based on the best nature can provide. I don't have time to wait and see, I would like to live my life normally with vigor and happiness. Something I think many thin people take for granted.
Ya know, I agreed with all the anti-Atkin-ists until I finally tried the friggin' diet. Guess what guys? We was wrong. For the first time in my life I'm dieting and not hungry. I feel balanced. Wake up in the morning more alert than I ever have. And I'm losing weight. And guess what? The studies are beginning to prove that Atkins was right. It ain't the fat that makes the fat...in one study
"• At the end of the year, the Atkins dieters had an 18% increase in HDL (good) cholesterol, compared with 3% increase for the other group; Atkins dieters had a 28% drop in triglycerides (blood fats), while others had a 1% increase. Neither group had changes in LDL (bad) cholesterol." ("ther other group" refers to conventional dieters)
Dr. Atkins wherever you are, herewith my apologies....
Your forgetting that in that study, daily multivitamins and other nutritional supplements like an essential-oils supplement containing 1,200 milligrams of fish oil, were given ONLY to the atkins dieters.. WHY NOT TO THE OTHER GROUP? Those things alone could have dropped the level of triglycerides for the other group as well. A few of these studies you hear about, have also been funded by the Robert Atkins foundation itself.. so try to read behind the lines :D people are sneaky when they want to make money -.-
All I can say is that I have tried the Atkins diet. I am on the Atkins diet. The diet works. Now, I was never really in a position where I was severly overweight, maybe 25 lbs. which isn't a lot on a 6'1" frame. My worries, and my personal pysicians worries, were that my high cholsterol (hereditary) would go through the roof. Before starting the diet my total cholesterol was at 325 (I know, I know, walking dead man). I was taking Lovastatin daily to assist in controlling the cholesterol. Well, after three months of the "Low-Carb Lifestyle" I am off Lovastatin and am maintaining a total cholesterol of 176. Hard to believe when my Saturday morning breakfast is three eggs and lots of bacon. My HDL is way up, LDL is down DRAMATICALLY. To date I have lost the 25lbs, have my abs back (yes I do work out as well and always have, even before atkins) and I have never had more energy than I do currently. So, for the doubt filled people out there, you are entitiled to your opinions and I am sure that in some cases they are warranted. For me and my physician (who is now on Atkins) we are believers.
As a footnote: I go for bi-weekly bloodwork to monitore my progress, like I said, no more Lovastatin.
Everyone of you who say this diet works...sure...I'll give you credit for that. You would lose weight if you completely eliminate carbs...duh...thats common sense...they have fatty contents so by not eating them...you'd be right. HOWEVER.. are you also aware that carbs are vital for your body?????? Granted, they may provide some fatty content...you still need them for proper function. Ever heard of carbohydrate deficiency? Thats just one of the reasons why you need carbs. Any of you who feel that gorging on cheeseburgers and bacon is remotely healthy...wow...now we're just lookin for an excuse to indulge in junk aren't we? Or...did exercise ever come to mind? I love how ppl get offended with that. NO, exercise is not actually getting out of your car to go into McDonald's instead of driving thru the drive-thru either. Ppl should have a LIL more common sense.
I have been on atkins for over a year and am healthier now than i have ever been. I also lost 40 lbs in the first 3 months of the diet without really even trying. And for all of you who think it's all cheeseburgers and bacon, I very seldome eat either opting for fish or poultry and take in enough carbs so that I don't get carbohydrate deficiency, hehe. And I also eat lots of green and fiber rich veggies. I also keep tabs on my cholesteral which has held steady at 160 since starting the diet. So for all you non believers, you might as well start believing. It works, and it's healthy.
I've been on Atkins for well over a year now. The last time my cholesterol was checked it was 151 - LDL 98 and HDL 45. Triglicerides were 38.
Which number like these I doubt I'll devolop heart disease.
...all cheeseburgers and bacon, exercise isn't jumpint out the car to go to McDonalds, losing weight cos you're not eating any carbs....GO READ THE BOOK YOU IDIOT before you come on and slate things you know nothing about!!!!
Good god how do some of you people manage to keep breathing? The stupidity in here is stifling. First of all, just because someone is on the Atkins diet, doesn't mean they gorge themselves on beef patties covered in melted cheese. You are supposed to eat what satisfies your hunger and that's it. Cheese is problematic for some people and may stall their weight loss. Bacon can contain nitrates and is considered a "no no" by Dr. Atkins. Also, Dr. Atkins specifically mentions the importance of exercise and says that exercise is non-negotiable. If you want to keep the muscle mass you have to exercise. Avoiding trans fat is also emphasized. I'm amazed at the ignorance some people have concerning this diet. This isn't a gorge on whatever the hell you please diet, and it's actually pretty damn restrictive. If you take time to read the book you'd realize this. And there's no excuse. The book is available in pdf format just about everywhere.
The Atkins diet is unhealthy for the long term, but for the short term, to lose 15, 20 lbs...is much healthier than not losing it at all.....
