as usual, there are problems with the latest atkins diet study. i really like the advice given by dr. stanley rockson (chief of consultative cardiology at stanford university school of medicine): it gets back to what grandmothers said. do everything in moderation.
for me, the key has always been exercise. between my two previous jobs, i lost weight by walking every day. then i got a job, stopped walking, and gained it all back. then i quit that job, started walking again, and lost it all and more. my diet has been lower-fat during the periods i've lost weight vs. when i've gained, but not low-fat.

for short-term weight loss, the anecdotal evidence of successes with the atkins diet seems pretty plentiful. as a long-term diet, i haven't heard many anecdotes, and the science seems to weigh (pretty heavily) against it. it's pretty much a non-starter for vegetarians (and absolutely so for vegans), and i think i'd have a tough time doing it with my dairy aversion.
eating fewer processed foods (and less restaurant-prepared food) is probably the second-biggest factor in losing weight for me.
i'm happy with where i'm at right now, although skinny is a stretch. my bmi still puts me in the overweight
category. i'll keep chipping away at it, but i'm not in a hurry.
atkins is a sham.
I used to think it was all a sham before I went to Spain. Now I'm not so sure. Perhaps it's the fact that they might walk more there. Perhaps it's the smoking (but the 10 year old kids don't). Either way we have rampant obesity here, especially in kids. And in Spain everyone's thin even though they eat food laden with fat and oils. What could be causing the problem in the U.S.? Trans-fatty acids??? Processed grains??? Beef hormones??? Who knows, maybe it's all Nintendo's fault... But now I don't believe anything I've been told when it comes to diet, especially if it seems obvious. 99.7% of what you hear is just speculation, not based any sort of scientific analysis.
atkins IS a sham.
putting your body into a permanent state of ketosis (by denying it the glucose it burns as a primary fuel) cannot be good for you.
besides, the kind of self-mutilation atkins prescribes does absolutely nothing to address peoples' cholesterol intake, and may in fact worsen their cholesterol count (a major factor in heart disease) by increasing their intake of animal products.
sure, vegans can't go on atkins -- but why would they? they're generally the healthiest, most well-proportioned people around, and for good reason.
Atkins! Lost 25 pounds easily and don't have any real cravings. Back in my old clothes and my old belt fits again. Now my family complains that I can't lose any more...so, I will probably stop. I think I'm where I belong. It's a great diet.

My Dad's been on the Atkins diet for a little while now and loves it. He has lost a little weight but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the colestoral boost he's had. Given how much shit he gave me about being vegitarian, the whole moderation argument, I was really surprised he went atkins... Per item 2 Jim you're practically skinny at least that what it seemed last month. I hope the work at home stuff continues to do well by you. As for low vs. no fat. some fat is good - avacados - olive oil - just keep away from the crappy processed foods
