why is it that scandinavians make the coolest furniture? the garden, peel, and ekstrem chairs from stokke all look incredible. they also all cost way more than i can imagine paying for a chair. well, maybe not the ekstrem—it costs about as much as an aeron, which i can imagine shelling out for. (even despite the hype, aerons rock.)

wow, truly amazing. I've been admiring Scandinavian designed furniture since I was a little tot. They generally make exceptional stuff. I think a lot of this is due to the need for a comfortable chair when drunk (which is much of the time). Really after a bit of aquavit and beer no one wants (or is capable) to sit on a stool.
In general the fins have a great sense of design, crafty feeling with a subtle dark undercurrent derived from some really chronic alcoholism. The Norwegians are, well small local outfits, the only real impact they've had in the past millenium is with Helly Hansen the best darn weather gear arround. They have a thing or two to learn from the Swedes. Ikea the pinnacle of marketing and hype, they even got me to buy meatballs (I'm a vegitarian, WTF). They constantly tread the fine line of cost function and form, unfortunately they usually cut the cost. As for the Danes, well they aren't really Scandinavian and their designs show it. They are just to affable and not drunk and miserable enough to be artists let alone industrial designers. but thats just my thought..
