here's how i might spend my jury duty money.
verdict. kidnap with the intent to commit rape: not guilty (along with all lesser charges). sodomy of an unconscious victim: guilty. rape: guilty. (all links to approximate locations of the relevant california law. i didn't make note of the specific charges against the defendant.)
now that i've had a chance to look at the penal code, i'm a little surprised to learn that the kidnapping with the intent to commit rape charge carries the stiffest sentence (life with possibility of parole, compared to three to eight years each for the sodomy and rape charges).
more thoughts on the experience at a later date, maybe.
wow, you can now donate money to my alma mater online. cool. i think it is funny they're still using the page layout and graphics for the alumni association's website that i made shortly after i graduated six years ago. (except for the addition of two ugly logos for the companies that donated the hardware and connectivity.) maybe some year they'll complete the apparently arduous task of putting the alumni directory online. (i just don't have the heart to get involved.)
as stupid as i think the new top-level domains are, i'm very tempted to try registering 'show.biz' and 'travel.info', since they are reportedly the two highest-demand new possibilities. it's like playing the lottery!
but it would also be very tempting to just not commercialize the domains if i got them.
week 2 of the beast delivered brutal ratings. don't expect to see it last much longer. after seeing the "previously on the beast" bit at the beginning of the episode, it really seemed like they had skipped an episode or something. there were scenes i didn't remember from the first episode. the show just strains believability too much, although it definitely has an interesting style to it.
dig the bored corp. cubicle party. cute.
if, as john lennon says, "life is what happens when you're busy making other plans," what is it that happens when you're not making plans?
i just noticed something disappointing about weather.com's local weather info—they don't supply anything except forecasts and current conditions. i can't find out how hot it got today, or yesterday, or last week. it got quite hot today (at least 93°, which is what it was at 3:53pm today), but it didn't feel bad. the heat during the day isn't terrible, since the humidity is low (<30%, generally), but at night it doesn't cool off all that much, and the humidity jumps up over 60% and it is much less comfortable. i'm still surviving without air conditioning, though.
john lee hooker and carrol o'connor both passed away today. it always seems that celebrity deaths come in threes, so if you're a celebrity, watch out.
