last night, the beast premiered on abc (with apparently disappointing results). for a pilot episode, the show wasn't all that bad. the tone was uneven, and it costars jason gedrick (falcone, ez streets, and murder one -- the guy has an eye for good but doomed television series). it has a bit of an aaron-sorkin pace to it, and you can spot the mimi leder influence in the direction (she loves to shoot through windows, a la the "love's labor lost" episode of er). i'll probably keep watching the show as long as it lasts, but it is certain to join the ranks of all the other interesting dramas that are killed before really finding their footing. (cbs's big apple was the most recent of those.)

here is an interesting-looking php photo album tool. i know i've been asked a few times about this sort of thing, and this one looks pretty good (although it requires a mysql database). i need to automate how i upload photos to this site (and create the thumbnails), since my current manual process definitely reduces my desire to add photos. (from metafilter, where slooze is also recommended.)

looks like apple is letting the cube inventory run out. too bad. it was a cool concept. if i had the cash to burn, it would be very tempting to get the high-end cube and use it to replace my ever-flaky server. (i figure with an airport card and os x, the cube would make a great wireless gateway.)
