trainedmonkey

by Jim Winstead Jr.

i want a computer that has: two 100base-T ports, a pcmcia slot, room for at least one 3.5" hard drive, stereo sound out, two serial ports, a parallel port, and a processor that can run linux and is at least powerful enough to do mp3 decoding while other stuff is going on. low power consumption and noise are key. it would be so nice to replace the midsize-tower monstrosity that sits under my stereo with something no larger than a family-size kleenex box.

Doesn't hit all (or probably any) of the specs, but it's got the size:

it's missing the pcmcia slot and the second ethernet port, but otherwise it is pretty close. it's a little pricy, though, and more powerful than i really need.

getting an old netwinder would be cool. i'll have to remember to keep an eye out for them. there must be a warehouse full of them somewhere.

if i were in the market for a laptop, i'd be happy that macconnection is running a great deal on ibooks.
