once more unto the breach

i find myself looking at forum software once again, and find myself relatively underwhelmed with what i find, once again. a whole lot of sketchy code for a whole lot of sketchy functionality.

It's sad, really. I wish I had the time to fix one of them because I have a great use for a nice forum system.

The more I look around, the more I'm convinced that using NNTP is the right way to go.

I think there's some kind of wierd software-development "tragedy of the commons" going on.

On one hand, you have the newbie hackers, who hack together a monstrosity that runs user input in a call to system() as root; on the other, you have the experienced software engineers, who come up with something like Zope that would take weeks to set up, when all you want is a forum.

I am somewhat biased since I am the author of one of the forum packages (FUDforum). But, what specifically do people not find to their liking in existing solutions? Generic statements are fine, but some specifics would no doubt help the authors improve the code :)
